· Staff-to-child ratio refers to the maximum
number of children that should be in a room with one
provider. For example, toddlers (age 18 months to
3 years) should number no more than six toddlers per
provider in one room.
· Smaller staff-to-child ratios lead to children
imitating speech and gestures earlier and more often,
being more responsive and cooperative to adults and
other children, being more likely to be involved in
group activities and being less exposed to danger
and distress.
· Currently, Nebraska regulations require compliance
with staff-to-child ratios on a center-wide basis
only. Nebraska is the only state in the country with
a center-wide ratio requirement.
· Voices for Children promotes the requirement
of staff-to-child ratios on a room-by-room basis in
order to protect the needs of Nebraska's children
and be in compliance with national recommendations.
